In the quartet concert - a typical Arditti blockbuster - it was not Ferneyhough´s Third which stood out, nor Elliott Carter´s typically convoluted Fourth, nor yet the simplistic Second of Sofia Gubaidulina. In fact, it was Zeitstrahl by Robert Platz, a Cologne-based composer-conductor, which made the strongest impression. The final pages in particular, suggested a mind capable of imagining new sounds and structures without resort to wishful thinking.

The piece (Gubaidulina), on initial impact certainly, was inferior to the works which flanked it, Robert Platz´ Zeitstrahl, whose stratospheric patterning and precisely refined timbres lent it a sense of great space and timelessness...
